The Christina Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Christina Davis was a member of the Coachella Valley Watercolor Society, The Palm Springs Art Museum, The Arts Student League in New York, The Association of Botanical Artists and the National Association of Women Artists. Her botanical, abstract, representational paintings and collages have been exhibited in museums,galleries,universities and private collections throughout the United States, Western Europe, Scandinavia and Southeast Asia.

The Judges selected Jim Nelson as the2015 recipient of the Christina Davis Memorial Scholarship $400.00 award.

His portrait of J.T. Abernathy was submitted for the competition. The painting is  his personal tribute to an 85 year old potter in Michigan. “Even though he suffers from macular degeneration, JT continues to inspire and offer creative opportunities to many students with his pottery classes.”
Jim plans on using the scholarship funds this October for a week long watercolor workshop in Santa Fe with artist Charles Reid.
Judges comment: Great composition; great use of materials, professional presentation on heavy paper/ signed; good use of brush work.

Connie Zane took 2nd in the Christina Davis Memorial Scholarship award for $300..

On hearing of her prize , she stated,” I plan to use the money for ongoing inspiration in mixed media.  I've picked out 6 books, 2 videos, and at least one on-line class that I'd like to take to further my endeavors into collage and mixed media.”

The Awards were presented to Jim and Connie at the General Meeting, February 9th, 2015, Joslyn Center, Palm Desert.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Note:  Two Awards will be granted at the request of the Judges.

First Place                                                          $ 600.00

Second Place                                                      $ 400.00

Each Award recipient is required to use the funds to enhance their art skills: by participating in professional painting class(es), learning a desired technique with  mentor(s),develop or improve life drawing/painting skills; experiment with abstract and/collages…all in the medium of your choice.

Each Award recipient is required to bring to the November 2015 Coachella Valley Watercolor Society meeting two pieces of their original art and explain how, where and with whom they studied. ( Suggestions include but not limited to: Coachella Valley Watercolor Society workshops, Venus Studio classes; Desert Art Center( PS); Palm Springs Art Museum classes and independent professional art teachers.)

  2. Artwork submitted may be drawings, paintings, collages in the MEDIUM of your choice.( Please NOTE: While sponsored by the Watercolor Society, you are NOT required or expected to submit a watercolor painting.  The judges want to see your best work in any medium.)
  1. Photoshop or other digital software may NOT be used to enhance the art.
  2. NO sculpture, photographs or 3 dimensional art work.
  3. Applicants must be 18 years or older
