Nels was self employed as a free lance sign and pictorial painter for 35 years. He lives in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He is retired now but maintains his studio and teaches watercolor painting there during the summer. For the past sixteen years, he and his partner, Rosemarie Vermilyea, have resided in the desert from New Years Day to the first of May. He teaches and demonstrates here as well and is an active member of CVWS.

Nels paints outdoors in all mediums. Watercolors are the most interesting to him because the are unpredictable. He likes to say, “ Each new painting feels like a voyage of discovery. What new thing will this medium teach me today?”

One of the founders and past president of the Northstar Watercolor Society , he is past president of Oldtown Artists, the oldest cooperative studio in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 2000, he was chosen “Painter of the Year,” and Plein Air Painter of the Year by the Coachella Valley Watercolor Society. His painting “Old Palo Verde” won People’s Choice and the Carl Moore Transparent Light Award.

Other awards for his landscapes include “Best of Shows” for Northstar, CVWS, Riverside County Date Fair and Northern Lights, a five state exhibition at Century College in White Bear Lake -  to mention just a few of the many ribbons he has won.

His watercolors are widely collected and he is a well respected teacher.
